YUMA COUNTY BIRD LIST

Spring is Mar-May
Summer is June-Aug
Fall is Sep-Nov
Winter is Dec-Feb
C - Common, usually seen 3 out of 4 visits
U - Uncommon, usually seen 1 out of 4 visits
R - Rare, usually not seen, and may be absent some years
V - Vagrant, not expected in our area
B - Confirmed or probable breeding
I - Irregular, may be present some years and absent others
Notes on Status Codes
These codes are the likelihood of finding a bird species if you look for it in the right type of habitat, at the right time of year, at the right time of day. Even within a particular season, there is much variation among birds. For example, many shorebirds start their southward migration in mid summer and finish up in fall. So although a bird is marked as "C" for summer (such as Greater Yellowlegs), it may be totally absent in June and common only in July and August. There may also be variation among an individual bird species from year to year. For example, Hooded Mergansers are usually very difficult to find in Yuma County, but the winter of 2007-2008 was exceptionally good for them, and we saw multiples at Imperial NWR, local golf course ponds, and the Yuma Main Drain.

Notes on Species
This list contains only those species that I have personally observed, or have first-hand knowledge of, over the past twelve years. Older sightings of accidental and vagrant birds which aren't likely to re-appear, such as Red-billed Tropicbird, are not included.
